Turbocharging, also known as adding a turbo or supercharging, is the process of forcing additional air into a running internal combustion engine. This allows for more power, which in turn increases torque and hence acceleration.

A turbocharger works by compressing the incoming air to a level lower than the inlet pressure, creating a positive displacement. The compressed air gains energy as it is forced through a turbine, which also turns an output shaft or drives an electric generator.
